Graham Farish GWR 94xx Pannier Tank
Graham Farish are best known these days fro their N gauge range of models which were introduced in 1970 and are now owned by Bachmann plc. Before that the Romany Work at Holton Heath in Poole and even earlier the Bromley works, produced a range of OO gauge models and track. The Formoway track was well received and adverts often featured on the back cover of many model railway magazines of the day. The range of wagons was extensive, varied and popular. Not so extensive was the locomotive range, the first two being an ex-LMS Black Five and Southern Railway streamlined West Country/Merchant Navy, both of which used a tender mounted motor and drive shaft to the loco. There was also a GWR King class loco. Two other locomotives were the GWR 61xx Prairie tank and the 94xx Pannier tank, both of which used a more conventional motor arrangement. My model was purchased from Biles Bros in Dartmouth around 1973 for £10.62p, quite a lot of money at the time. This was probably one the last locos made, as production ceased around this time. The loco is a reasonable model of the GWR Hawksworth Pannier tank, of which only 9400 - 9409 were delivered before nationalisation in 1948. BR went on to build over two hundred locomotives using private contractors up to 1956. Truro's (83F) allocation included 94xx panniers, albeit in the 84xx numbering sequence. The model, currently numbered 9403 is fantastic runner and has been repainted in BR black with the early lion& wheel emblem. Weathering has been achieved using the dry brush technique using Lifecolor and Railmatch acrylic paints. The loco appears to have suffered a water leak from the safety valve and the limescale deposit is represented by dry brushing matt white onto the model and then rubbing it back using a cotton bud. Some further work is required to glaze the cab windows.
